Both bone and shell hairpipe are mentioned in American Fur Company Records as early as the mid 1840's being traded to the Crow at Ft. Alexander on the Yellowstone River. Around 1880's a trader among the Ponca discovered that bone pipe stems from corn cob pipes were in demand as hairpipe and they were then produced in quantity and have been available in the trade ever since. 1/2", 1", 1-1/2"-100 per bag 2", 3", 4"-50 per bag.
